What is the Fund?
Incorporated in Missouri in February 1983, the William
L. Clay Scholarship and Research Fund awards scholarships
for full-time study toward the bachelor's degree. Whenever
possible, the scholarship covers full tuition and fees.
The first scholarships were awarded for the 1985-1986
academic year.
When resources permit, the fund will award grants for
research in government and politics.
Who Can Apply for a Scholarship?
All applicants must be recommended by responsible adults
or school counselors who know the applicant's character
and academic ability. Students must be high school seniors
when they first apply. The applicant must reside in
the 1st Congressional District of Missouri. No applicant
will be denied participation based on race, creed, color,
national origin or religion. There are no charges associated
with participation in the application process. Scholarships
are renewable based on academic achievement.
How is the Fund Administered?
The Board of Directors governs the Fund. A Scholarship
Review Committee screens applicants and makes recommendations
to the president of the Board.
The Board of Directors meets annually.

It is extremely gratifying to look back as we celebrate
25 years of success with the Fund founded because
of my deep concern for the plight of worthy young people
whose academic potential might have been denied without
the financial assistance offered. The achievement of
our students has been a source of great pride to me.
They have given me the inspiration to pursue the next
fifteen years with equal diligence.
Are Contributions Tax-Deductible?
The Fund was granted tax-exempt status under Section
501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, in December
1983. Our Federal Tax Number is 43-1288222.
Which colleges can a Clay Scholar attend?
Scholars have attended 51 major
colleges and universities, including seven partner
schools boasting ten or more Scholars since the Fund's
inception. Saint Louis University and the University of
Missouri at Columbia also hosted Scholars in the double
digits.
Are all high school seniors eligible for the
Scholarship?
Any student living in Congressional District 1 is
eligible. To date, 31 high schools that
have supplied Clay Scholars.
Does the Fund support student of all academic
majors?
Scholars have pursued a wide variety of degree, with
Business Administration, Biology and Education
ranking as the most popular choices for a major field of
study. The Fund remains dedicated to allowing students
to choose whichever major they wish.
How does the Clay Scholarship help students become
successful professionals?
Clay Scholars are hard-working students who need
financial help to bear the burden of a college
education. It's no surprise that their college education
leads to success in the professional realm. Clay
Scholarship Alumni have become successful in many
different career fields. Most popular among these career
fields are business administration and law. Other
popular industries include education, pharmaceuticals
and engineering.
